Player spotlights
Lauren Davis
- 26 years old
- Right-handed
- 5'2"
- American
Lauren began playing tennis at age 9 when her mother's friend, former pro Oksana Beilensen, thought Lauren would do well at the sport. Good prediction! While currently ranked 62, Lauren has a career-high singles ranking of 26 (May 2017). She's also had five straight season finishes in the top 100, and in 2017 finished in the top 50. That was the year Lauren won her first WTA title at Auckland.
Lauren had some big wins last summer too! At Wimbledon, she came back from dropping the first set against Angelique Kerber to take the win over the fifth seed and defending champion to advance to the third round. At the Citi Open later that month, she took down Eugenie Bouchard in the first round, and third seed (and this year's Australian Open winner) Sofia Kenin in the second round. She has proven herself a worthy opponent to anyone on the other side of the net.
Davis has played matches in both Columbus, OH and Boca Raton, FL.
Ernesto Escobedo
- 23 years old
- Right-handed
- 6'1"
- American
Ernesto "Neto" Escobedo began playing tennis at age four. The young Neto idolized in the likes of Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal. Good ones to follow! He turned pro in 2014, and 2017 was his breakout year. He achieved career-high rankings nine times that year (!), peaking at No. 67 in July, following his Wimbledon debut.
Neto is coached by none other than one of our Maui Fantasy Camp Pros, and former legend himself, Jan-Michael Gambill. If Neto wasn’t a tennis player, he says he would be an NFL quarterback. His favorite quarterback is Tony Romo.
Neto is currently ranked ATP 181 and has been a great presence in our MatchPlay series. He has played 10 matches so far, with notable wins over Marcos Giron, Zachary Svajda, and Brandon Nakashima.
Neto is playing in Newport Beach, CA at Palisades Tennis Club.
