Interview with #WINbledon contest winner Steve Gulla

Interview with #WINbledon contest winner Steve Gulla

We recently caught up with the 2016 #WINbledon contest winner Steve Gulla, the lucky winner of a package for two to the 2017 Ladies and Gentlemen’s Wimbledon Finals. With Wimbledon right around the corner, we asked him a few questions to see how he’s handling the excitement of his upcoming trip of a lifetime.

GSTT:

Have you already started packing?

Steve Gulla:

Hah! I think I’ll start packing a few days before we leave. 🙂

GSTT:

I know you were close to going to Wimbledon once before, but did you ever imagine you’d attend the Wimbledon Finals?

SG:

No, never the Wimbledon Finals. If I had a chance to pick any sporting event in the world, on any day, I would pick the Men’s Wimbledon Final. I always felt I would make it to the tournament one day, but I never felt the finals was a possibility.

GSTT:

If you could pick any match-up to watch in the Final, on both the Gentlemen’s and Ladies sides, who would it be?

SG:

I’m a huge Federer fan, so I’ll be holding my breath each round. I bet I’m not in the minority to say a Fed – Nadal final would be ideal. It would be amazing to see Fed win against anyone, honestly, but to beat Nadal would be the sweetest victory for me. My finals prediction is Fed-Kyrgios.

For the women, I’m a bit less decisive. It’s always fun to see a first time winner. I would imagine the atmosphere and buzz around the grounds leading up to the final would be amazing if Konta managed to get through. It would be fun to see a Sharapova-Konta final. It would be nice to see Pliskova win a Slam after being so close, but I’m not sure how much she likes grass.

GSTT:

 And what about the winners?

SG:

Federer – Bouchard or Vesnina (too early to pick one for the women 😉 ) [Editor’s Note: Elena Vesnina is an extremely fun woman and is represented by Grand Slam Tennis Tours partner Topnotch Management.]

GSTT:

Having never been, what’s the one thing about Wimbledon you’re really excited to experience during your trip?

SG:

Just being in Centre Court where all the iconic matches have taken place – Borg/McEnroe 1980 final, Fed/Nadal finals, Connors over Mac in 5 sets in 1982.

GSTT:

What about London in general?

SG:Since this will be my first time in London, I have a lot to see. The National Gallery of London and the Tate, famous places: Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Kensington Palace and Windsor Castle, to name a few. Also, I’m a tea drinker, so it will be nice to sample all of the various teas there and witness their tea culture.
GSTT:Who are you taking with you?
SG: My wife, Pam, and two sons, Noah and Maximo.
GSTT:Besides Wimbledon, if you could win a trip to any other tennis event, which would it be?
SG:Roland Garros. [Editor’s Note: We can make this dream come true, as well.]
GSTT:Thank you, Steve.
SG:You bet. See you at Wimbledon!

Editor's note: Steve had a great time at Wimbledon.
